March 17, 2013 the Kansas City Atheist Coalition held an “Ask an Atheist” event on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Westport Road one block away from the Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade route.
Unfortunately, KCAC was denied entry into the parade out of “respect for the legacy of St. Patrick”, according to the parade committee’s official statement.
Despite being banned from the parade, KCAC still managed to join in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. We had a blast at our “Ask an Atheist” event where we held signs and made ourselves available to answer questions from the public about being an atheist while also bringing attention to the parade organizers’ discriminatory actions.
